I am a Professor of Philosophy at the University of St Andrews.  My current research focuses on questions around

  • trust and distrust, trustworthiness and untrustworthiness
  • impostor syndrome as social obstacle to self-knowledge

Where possible I like to explore these questions as they arise in particular social contexts, for example science communications, trust in public audit, and online privacy, and am always glad to hear from potential collaborators.

I am a member of the board of the St Andrews Centre for Exoplanet Science. where we explore the ethical and social implications of scientific research.

My other main area of research is metaphysics, where I have mostly written about persistence, identity, and parthood, and am beginning to think more about the metaphysics of social reality.
